In Audio & Video, Updates from Jo

As many of us prepare for a very different, distanced Thanksgiving this year, the Karuna Center for Peacebuilding shares a video of a conversation they hosted about the deeper meanings of this holiday.

Larry Spotted Crow Mann, an author and citizen of the Nipmuc Nation, speaks with Senator Jo Comerford about his novelย The Mourning Road to Thanksgiving. Using the book as a guide and cornerstone, they talk about Native experiences of Thanksgiving and its history in the U.S. Northeast.

Their conversation reveals a history of Thanksgiving that most of us did not learn in school. Larry and Jo talk about how Thanksgiving myths continue to affect Native people in our region todayโ€”and how far apart our different stories and experiences of U.S. history really are. The Karuna Center for Peacebuilding hopes this insightful conversation will provide an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of our complicated history.

If you’d like to purchaseย The Mourning Road to Thanksgiving, please consider making your purchase through Rise Up & Sing as all proceeds from these sales go directly to the author and to the Ohketeau Cultural Center.
